Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has selected Doyin Okupe as his running mate for the 2023 presidential election.
The Ogun State born physician was picked to beat the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) deadline for submission of names for the 2023 general election; which was stipulated as June 17, 2022. However, his selection is subject to substitution on or before August, when a substantive candidate for the Vice President spot will be officially announced. This will mean that Okupe’s selection is most likely an interim measure; before the end of rounds of consultation within the party for a VP candidate.
In an interview late on Friday, Doyin Okupe affirmed the submission of his name, before clarifying his position as an interim one before a proper choice is made.
‘As I am speaking with you, I am the Vice-Presidential candidate of the Labour Party.
‘My name has been submitted to INEC and that’s the situation as at today.
‘It’s important for us to ensure that all the stakeholders are carried along from the beginning to the end. Because of this, I, Dr. Doyin Okupe is standing as the Vice-Presidential candidate,’ he added.
Doyin Okupe is the co-founder of Royal Cross Medical Centre, and also a politician with years of service to two previous presidents of Nigeria. He was the National Publicity Secretary of National Republican Convention and a one-time governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State.
Okupe was Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo and Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan. His time with Peter Obi dates back to when both politicians were presidential aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
They both left to join the Labour Party (LP) after Okupe had served as presidential aide and Director-General of Peter Obi Campaign Organisation,
