The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared the professorship of Isa Pantami as illegal.

During a press conference on Monday, ASUU President – Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke explained the irregularities of the promotion of the Communication and Digital Economy Minister; adding that sanctions will be placed on all ASUU members involved.

The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Owerri (FUTO) will also face similar sanctions.

“You cannot be a minister and a lecturer in a university. It is an encouragement of illegality.

“Pantami has to quit as a minister and be tried for doing double jobs within the same federal system. He is not qualified. Pantami should not be treated as a professor.

“We have resolved to sanction ASUU members involved in his promotion and the VC of FUTO,” he stated.

The declaration—which was made after the National Executive Council meeting— also follows after Pantami and seven other academic personnels were promoted to a professorship level by FUTO’s council last year.

Many within the academic sector had kicked against it; due to Pantami’s status as a ‘non-teacher’ of the University. Another point highlighted by critics was that the Minister had a lecturer status before delving into politics.

ASUU’s declaration counts as the second key decision made by the body today; after earlier announcement made to start a one-month warning strike.
