Violent protests took place in Kazakhstan after the government increased the price of fuel. According to government Authorities, clashes between government security forces and civilians, they left more than 9,000 detained, over 160 civilians killed and 18 Security Agents killed across the country, after the president ordered the armed forces to shoot without warning. Protest which began on the 2nd of January in the oil rich city of Zhanaozen, spread to other parts of the country.

Members of the CSTO including Russian on January 5th, sent troops to Kazakhstan, providing support for President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s authoritarian government.

In an address on Friday, President Tokayev claimed that his government withered down an ‘attempted coup d’etat’ against Kazakhstan (A Former Suviet Union Nation), by violent protesters which he called Bandits and Terrorists. Anger and frustration spread across the country over the economic and political situation in the country; but recent fuel price hike had sparked the violent protests. Protesters not only demands for the reduction of fuel price, but also other issues like the Resignation of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s and the return of the 1993 Kazakh Constitution and others.
