Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed speaking during the opening of the Just Concluded AU heads of state and government Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on February 5, 2022.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), has suggested the establishment of a continental-level media body for Africa.
While giving the opening speech at the just concluded African Union summit, PM Abiy opined that it will be imperative to counter misleading stereotypes and narratives of Africa.
He further stressed that the media body will seek to give one voice to the African people, and cut down on the misinformation put out about Africa to the rest of the world.
“I would like to propose to this august body the establishment of an African Union Continental Media House.
“The stereotypical and negative media representations of Africa not only disinforms the rest of the world about our continent, but it also shapes the way we see ourselves as Africans.
“The endless representation as a continent troubled by civil wars, hunger, corruption, greed, disease and poverty is demeaning and dehumanizing and likely driven by a calculated strategy and agenda,” he said.
During the Assembly, PM Abiy touched on the failed security measures within Ethiopia, and condemned the damages caused by law enforcement bodies to life and property.
He also clamoured for an African representation in the United Nations Security Council permanent seat.
On the establishment of an African media house, the Ethiopian Prime Minister concluded with a message of fighting false believes about the African continent by the provision of authoritative information.
The move will also seek to promote a collective agenda, and create opportunities for Pan African voices to be heard globally.
