Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) Friday, Feb. 25, 2022, in Orlando, FL
Former U.S. Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo, has offered to fly with Pelosi and her delegation to Taiwan, following earlier warning from China over her planned trip.
Pompeo, who served as Secretary of State under former President Donald Trump’s administration, made his intentions known via a tweet on July 24, joins other congressmen who have called on the U.S. Speaker of the House of Representatives to show strength towards China’s view on U.S.-Taiwan relations. Reports had been released previously stating Pompeo was scheduled to visit Taiwan in September and meet government officials, before. learning the country’s technology industry.
Experts opine the move is jeered towards strengthening U.S.-Taiwan cooperation in the ‘democratic industrial chain.’
‘Nancy, I’ll go with you. I’m banned in China, but not freedom-loving Taiwan. See you there!’ Mike Pompeo tweeted tagging the Speaker’s handle. In response to Pompeo’s offer, Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Wang Ting-yu, commented ‘Ok… We are looking forward to seeing you both here in Taiwan.’
Three days ago, representatives Tom Tiffany and Scott Perry urged Pelosi to ignore warnings from Beijing, and concerns expressed by the POTUS over the weekend. In a letter addressed to Pelosi, both men insisted that the House Speaker should ‘never have to ask a foreign dictatorship or the State Department for permission to talk to America’s friends and allies.’
They further called on Pelosi to push for termination of the ‘One China’ policy thereby solidifying ties with Taiwan.
Don Bacon, a representative, also tweeted ‘Communist China does not get to dictate who in America can visit Taiwan.’ While Representative Brian Fitzpatrick opined that calling off the trip would demonstrate ‘further weakness on the world stage and play into the hands of the Chinese Communist Party.’
On July 16, 2022, multiple sources confirmed Nancy Pelosi will lead a delegation to Taiwan in August, incurring a private warning on the concerns of China.
