Ogun State’s Ewekoro Local Government Area was rocked by news of the assasination of its monarch on Monday.
Late Oba Ayinde Odetola was elected as the Olu of Agodo before his death; but was rejected as the town’s traditional ruler by the Owu people
According to descriptive details made known to the public, a group of unknown gunmen had attacked the monarch as he drove into the village. The perpetrators also went further to burn Odetola in his car, leaving his remains beyond recognition.
Sister to the late ruler, Mrs Adenike Akintafe, also confirmed the incident carried out by hoodlums on Monday.
“I have just been discharged from hospital early this morning, only to start mourning the brutal assassination of my brother.
“Kabiesi called me on Saturday, urging me to reduce my activities, saying stress could contribute to my illness.
“He lost his younger brother to the imbroglio some months ago; the young man was butchered by the so-called hoodlums. Today, Kabiesi is no more, what a world”, Akintade wailed.
Also speaking on the incident, spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Department – Abimbola Oyeyemi – also stated that Police Commissioner, Lanre Bankole, was on ground at the scene of the crime to give an overview of the current situation. He also added that residents of Agodo community have fled the village for safety reasons after the incident.
He further played down rumours of additional attacks; reiterating that only the Oba was murdered during the incident.
Many believe that the incident was as a result of the tensions between the Owu and Ake people, which has resulted to clashes over the years.
