Several people have been killed in a massive blast, which took place after a truck carrying mining explosives hits a motorcycle in Bogoso, a mining city in Ghana.
The devastating blast which occurred on Thursday afternoon, completely leveled almost every building in Apiate, a small town in Western Ghana. Several humans and animals are still trapped under the debris, but the total number of casualties is yet to be confirmed by authorities.
Videos and pictures taken shortly after the explosion, shows large numbers of razzed building, woods and metal roof sheets littered across the scene of the incident. The explosives were being delivered between the gold mines of Tarkwa and Chirano.
Ghana’s police said investigations were underway and asks residents of nearby towns to open their churches and classrooms to the wounded.
“A huge explosion occurred this afternoon, Thursday, January 20, 2022, at Appiatse between Bogoso and Bawdie in the Western Region.
The Police and other emergency service providers have activated a full emergency recovery exercise.
We urge all to remain calm as we manage this unfortunate situation.
Full details will be communicated in due course,” Ghana Police service said in a statement released on facebook.
Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo offered his condolences to the victims and said he had received briefing on circumstances that led to the explosion, describing the incident as unfortunate.
“It is a truly sad, unfortunate and tragic incident, and I extend, on behalf of Government, deep condolences to the families of the deceased, and I wish the injured a speedy recovery. The Police, Armed Forces and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) are co-ordinating efforts to contain the situation, and I have also instructed NADMO to see to it that rapid relief is brought to residents of the town,” President Akufo-Addo said.
Mining accidents are a recurring problem in Ghana, one of Africa’s largest gold producers. In 2019, 16 people were killed at a gold mining site in northern Ghana, and just last year, three workers died after a gold mine collapse in southern Ghana.
