Senegal President Macky Sall has rewarded the national football team with cash prizes and lands for their performance at the just concluded African Cup of Nations tournament.
During a special ceremony at the presidential palace on Tuesday, President Sall announced that each team member will be given a sum worth $87,000 and a plot of land sized 200sqm. (2,100 square-foot) in Dakar, the country’s capital. He also rewarded each member of the team 500sqm plot in Diamniadio, a city close to Dakar.
Team members were appointed into the Order of the Lion; a prestigious honour in the West African nation, during the get-together.
President Sall expressed his delight while addressing the players from a podium that same day.
“By your vital force and your creative genius, you have reversed the course of history.
“We dreamed of the cup, you built this dream and you made it come true.
“There are no words to express you to our pride, our joy and our gratitude,” he said.
He also confirmed the death of three citizens during the massive celebration held on the arrival of the champions in Dakar, and urged coach Aliou Cisse to guide the team to the semi-finals of Qatar 2022 later in the year.
The entire nation was thrown into wild celebrations after Sadio Mane converted a match-winning penalty on Sunday to clinch Senegal’s first ever AFCON title.
