The Senegalese national football team were treated to a special welcome following their arrival at the national airport in Dakar.
The AFCON champions who clinched their first ever continental title, displayed the trophy during the victory bus parade much to the delight of the people present at the nation’s capital city.
Also amongst the thousands of fans who graced the victory parade was President Macky Sali. The bus procession moved slowly due to the thousands who trooped to the streets in ecstasy.
Many were also seen hanging from lengthy poles while others resorted to seat atop buses and cars. They were fireworks and loud cheers as the team bus moved from the airport towards the centre of Dakar.
Recall that the country’s authorities had declared Monday a public holiday to celebrate the victory; which ended a 60-year wait in the process.
Joyous scenes were also recorded at Paris, the French capital; where Senegalese pose a strong presence amongst other countries in mainstream Europe. Supporters also reached thousands at the Arc du Triomphe – jubilating since Senegal defeated Egypt on penalties on Sunday evening.
President Macky Sall – who put a hold to his foregn tour will host the AFCON champions at a reception today.
He also shared a tweet congratulating the team for their performance at the just concluded tournament.
“What a game! What a team! You did it. Beautiful moment of football, beautiful moment of communion and national pride. Congratulations to our heroes,” he tweeted.
Prior to their victory against Egypt on Sunday, Senegal had lost their two previous finals in 2019 and 2002, despite being tipped as favourites on both occasions.
