Russia suffered yet another setback in the ongoing war following the recapture of Snake Island by Ukrainian troops.

The strategically-located landmass, which sits on the Black Sea, is a vital spot just off the southern coast near Odesa city. The victory will potentially diminish chances of any Russian offensive on the entirety of coastline in that route. The welcomed news was disclosed by Ukraine’s armed forces Commander, Valeriy Zaluzhnyi; who credited the victory to the key role Ukrainian-made Bohdana howitzers played.

According to the Commander, these howitzers were employed to route Russian forces from Snake Island. He extended the gesture of gratitude to the support of foreign partners in pushing back Russian forces from that location. However, the announcement was followed up with one made by Russia’s ministry of defence.

The ministry stated that there was a tactical withdrawal of military forces to enable the resumption of grain-exporting activities in Ukraine’s Black Sea ports. It was previously reported that a halt to export operations gravely affected the African continent, threatening famine and causing a soar in food prices on a global scale. The Russian defence ministry further confirmed that the task assigned in this instance has been completed—thereby prompting the withdrawal.

‘In order to organise humanitarian grain corridors as part of the implementation of joint agreements reached with the participation of the UN, the Russian Federation decided to leave its positions on Zmiinyi Island,’ the Russian defence ministry stated.

A statement by Ukraine’s command in the southern region showed that the Russian troops fled on two speed boats, following the recapture. Recall that Ukraine were forced to abandon the Island firstly in February, after a Russian attack proved overwhelming. The bravery of stationed troops; who confronted the Russian offensive, where also lauded by netizens. A resistant move which remains a major highlight in the war.

In May 2022, Ukraine’s military intelligence chief, Kyrylo Budanov, emphasised the importance of Snake Island to both Russia and Ukraine; explaining that it was vital to controlling both land and air in southern Ukraine. He also warned of a likely Russian invasion of Western Ukraine via deployment of troops into Moldova’s Transnistria region.

Russia responded to the recapture by firing missiles into Odesa. Six people have been reported injured, including a tender-aged.
